Labour retains firm grip on Sunderland City Council as final results announced

Labour has retained a strong grip in Sunderland after winning 22 seats on election night.

The Conservatives won two seats and the Liberal Democrats won one - their first win in Sunderland since 2008.

Labour gained one seat over all. They lost Millfield to the Lib Dems, but won Houghton and Copt Hill from Independents.

Former Sunderland Tory leader Robert Oliver has returned to the council, representing the Barnes ward.

Among Labour councillors returned are Susan Watson, wife of council leader Paul Watson, and Pat Smith, the cabinet member for Children's Services.
