In March 2020, plans were submitted to convert part of the Signal House building at the junction of Waterloo Place and Holmeside.

Floor plans also map out around a dozen areas for games tables across two floors alongside booth seating, toilets and kitchen/ bar facilities.

Sunderland City Council’s planning authority approved the proposals on Thursday, April 30.

Council planners raised no issues around highway safety, the principle of the development or potential impacts on neighbours.

A decision report goes on to say: “Although no parking provision is proposed, the site is located within the city centre and very accessible to public transport services including rail, metro and buses as well as off-street andon-street parking facilities.”

Under planning conditions, works to convert the former shop space must take place within the next three years.

Applicants must also submit details of the ventilation and extraction system used in the kitchen for approval before the venue can open to the public.

No opening date has been set for the new snooker and billiard centre, and the plans come as such businesses remain closed due to coronavirus restrictions.
