Sunderland City Council previously approved a £2.8million investment towards new affordable bungalow schemes across the city, including sites in Houghton and Washington.

A third scheme included 17 homes off Cork Street in the Hendon ward to compliment a planned £1.4million disability day centre, which has now been granted planning permission.

The existing Northeast Disabilities Resource Centre (NDRC) will be demolished and replaced with a new build elsewhere on the council-owned site.

There will also be a mixture of one and two-bedroom bungalows.

NDRC is a dedicated centre for people with a range of physical and learning disabilities and also provides domiciliary home care support.

On its website, it states many of its clients and members are people diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, but it also provides support for those with other physical disabilities and/or learning disabilities.

Services include arts and crafts, computer skills, drama, gardening, social outings and exercise classes.

According to planning documents, the new specialist housing at Cork Street will help “meet the city’s needs.”

It goes on to say: “The proposal would reuse previously developed land in a sustainable location to deliver the identified housing types needed for the plan area.

“The proposed development is considered acceptable, as it is considered to comply with local and national planning policies.”

NDRC bosses are expected to manage the centre and bungalows at Cork Street when the development is completed.

The development is expected to create up to 10 new jobs.
