Earlier in April 2020, the Government removed requirements for physical attendance at local authority meetings to ensure “effective and transparent” decision making during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Although it will be up to individual councils to decide how voting and debate will take place, they have been told to make sure virtual meetings are accessible to the public.

The move was to ensure important decisions could still be made and democracy ensured as the coronavirus crisis continues to impact on life in the UK.

Hetton Town Council is now embracing the new powers to ensure formal meetings can go ahead and business continues while adhering to social-distancing rules and guidelines.

On Monday April 27, the town council will meet remotely for the first time through online video platform ‘Zoom’.

Chairman of the Management and Policy Committee, Coun Richard Elvin, said: “The town council welcomes the Government move to allow meetings to be held in this way.

“The impact of coronavirus on communities is severely restricting day to day activities, but the town council is eager that it remains business as usual.”

Members of the public are welcome to join the meeting which starts at 7.15pm.

Business will include discussing financial help for a local charity and looking at planning applications in the area.
