Buskers asked to keep it down after complaints of noise in Durham's Market place

The easing of COVID-19 restrictions has seen many shoppers forced to queue outside stores before being let in due to social distancing guidelines.

And county bosses have asked street performers to do their best to make sure they are not causing additional disruption for businesses.

Joanne Waller, head of community protection at Durham County Council, said: “Street entertainers, including buskers, can make a valuable contribution to the vibrant culture and atmosphere which exists in Durham City.

“We encourage acts to ensure noise is kept at an appropriate level and, like everyone visiting the city centre during the coronavirus recovery period, buskers should follow social distancing guidance at all times.”

Waller confirmed a complaint had been made about a busker performing in Durham city centre last Friday (July 24).

She added all issues would be considered ‘on an individual basis and our first response is to talk to the performer concerned’.
