Boris Johnson resigns from Government after Brexit plans announced

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has followed Brexit Secretary David Davis out the door following the Government announcement on plans for the UK leaving the EU.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary.

"His replacement will be announced shortly. The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work."

It comes after a cabinet meeting at the weekend set out plans for the UK's relationship with the EU after Brexit, which is thought to be unpalatable to those in favour to a harder Brexit.

Mr Johnson was a prominent figure in Theresa May's Government and spearheaded the Brexit campaign alongside cabinet colleague Michael Gove.

His departure will further rock the boat for the Prime Minister.

However Mrs May has told MPs she pays tribute to Boris Johnson and David Davis but said they "do not agree about" the best way to proceed with Brexit.
