POLICE are warning Wearsiders to be on the lookout for bogus callers offering council tax rebates.
There have been several reports of scammers telling householders they can get them £7,000-worth of council tax rebate if they can supply their bank details.
Detective Chief Insepctor Jim McAll, of the Economic Crime Unit, said: “I must stress that this call is not genuine.
“Anyone receiving calls like this should ignore them and not give the caller any details.
“Genuine contacts would not deal with financial matters over the telephone and would not ask for bank details in this way.
“Our advice is simple – if it seems too good to be true, then it usually is.”
