POLICE searching for missing football fan Colin Pine are expected to identify a body recovered from the River Wear in Sunderland today.
Mr Pine failed to return home after going out to watch the Newcastle/Sunderland derby on December 21.
Police received a report from a member of the public that a man’s body had been found on the banks of the River Wear in St Luke’s Road in Sunderland at around 11am on Saturday.
Officers attended and the body was recovered.
Enquiries are ongoing to formally identify the man.
Football fan Mr Pine, 55, of Ennerdale in Albany, Washington, has been missing since Sunday, December 21.
The RNLI said it removed the body from mudflats.
A police spokeswoman said: “Police searching for missing Washington man Colin Pine have found a body.
“Police received a report from a member of the public that a man’s body had been found on the banks of the River Wear in St Luke’s Road in Sunderland. Officers attended and the body was recovered.
“Inquiries are ongoing to formally identify the man.”
The RNLI said its Sunderland inshore lifeboat Northern Light along with the local Coastguard rescue team recovered the body from close to the hulk of a concrete tug.
It was taken back to the lifeboat station to be handed over to police and paramedics.
