Police seal off street as three arrested and man seriously hurt in 'aggravated burglary'

Police sealed off a street as three people were arrested in connection with an alleged aggravated burglary in Houghton.

A man was taken to hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries after a disturbance in Nesham Place shortly before 11pm last night.

Police sealed off the nearby Mount Pleasant, in the Market Place area of Houghton, this morning in connection with the incident.

Two men and one woman have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and remain in police custody.

Officers believe that a number of people had tried to force entry to a house armed with a spade.

The door of a house in the street has been damaged, while shattered glass has been left scattered in the road.

Residents living close by told of their shock at the incident.

One neighbour, who lives just yards away from the street, said: "It was about 11.15pm last night when I heard something.

"I was sitting watching TV at the time.

"I saw a police officer outside and then the lights from the cars flashing.

"In the end there were about nine police cars here and there were police dogs too.

"You can see shoes in the street but I'm not sure exactly what's happened.

"There were a lot of young people out looking at what was going on.

"The house where this has happened used to be a chapel but someone got planning permission to rebuild a new house there about 16 years ago.

"I've lived here 50 years and I've never had any bother so this is a surprise to me."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "At about 10.52pm last night, police received a report of a disturbance on Nesham Place, Houghton-le-Spring.

“It was reported that a number of people – believed to have armed themselves with a spade - had tried to force entry to an address.

"Those involved are believed to be known to each other.

Emergency services attended and a 54-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

“A full investigation was launched.

"Two men and one woman have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary in connection with the incident and remain in police custody.
