Police will have extra patrols outside two Sunderland schools this afternoon after a warning about a man approaching children was circulated to parents

Monkwearmouth Academy sent a text to parents this morning: "An unknown man has been present around the Fulwell Road and Roker Baths Road area who has approached children," it read.

"The police have been informed.

"Please ask your children to be vigilant and if they are approached please contact the police."

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said the force had investigated the reports: "On Thursday, November 2, police were informed about concerns around a suspicious vehicle outside St Benet's Primary School in Roker Baths Road.

"Officers attended and spoke to the driver and it was established there was nothing untoward.

"However, police are aware there had been a dispute between parents of pupils at the school and the driver.

"Officers will be outside both schools at the end of the school day to offer reassurance to the children and their parents."
