Northumbria Police say they have now identified the body of a man found near a railway viaduct yesterday.

Officers initially appealed for the public's help in identifying the man who was found dead near an old railway viaduct on the Derwent Walk, in between Winlaton Mill and Rowlands Gill.

Police are treating the death as “unexplained”.

He was found at 5.15pm on Tuesday, April 12, and emergency services confirmed he was dead at the scene in Gateshead.

Northumbria Police say he has now been identified and thanked those who had helped their investigation.

Officers said the man’s death is being treated as unexplained, but there is not believed to be any third party involvement.

Police have not revealed the name of the man who was described as a white male in his early 40’s, 5’10” to 6’ tall of medium build with short brown greying hair.

When he was found he was wearing a black rain jacket, a grey Game of Thrones T-shirt, blue jeans and trainers. He also had a tattoo of an oriental dragon on his left arm.
