Police cadets hand out burglary advice to residents

Northumbria Volunteer Police Cadets helped officers deliver burglary prevention advice to residents in Hetton, Easington Lane and Houghton at the weekend.

On Saturday, March 3 cadets along with officers from the Hetton Neighbourhood Policing Team delivered burglary prevention booklets to almost 30 streets across the three towns.

The booklets, funded for by the Safer Sunderland Partnership, provide a host of information to help residents keep burglars at bay. The comprehensive guide gives useful advice on making sure doors and windows are secure - a list of the security slip ups that make a home attractive to burglars is also included.

It had initially been planned to deliver the booklets to residents in Hetton with more booklets being delivered across Easington Lane and Houghton over the coming weeks. However, the patrols were so successful the team managed to cover the three areas with approximately 900 booklets given out.

And, while they were at Houghton Police Station the cadets even had a demonstration from PD Eddie from Northumbria Police's Dog Section.

Acting Inspector Les Goodliff said: "We're really grateful to the cadets for their help in delivering these booklets to residents across Hetton, Easington Lane and Houghton and offering crime prevention advice. The young cadets helped us cover a vast area and deliver this important burglary prevention advice to a lot of our local residents.

"As our way of saying thank you we asked our police dog section to give a demonstration and the opportunity for them to see PD Eddie in action and we're pleased they were able to do this.

"Last month Operation Impact was launched to tackle burglaries and this activity is part of our ongoing commitment to stopping burglars in the tracks, crime prevention plays a huge part and making a home as secure as possible could play a huge part in reducing the risk of being a victim.

"We will be delivering more booklets over the next few weeks so if anyone in Hetton, Easington Lane and Houghton has not yet received one they have not missed out."
