A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "At 12.12am police were informed that a car had collided with a road sign at Rainton Bridge.

"Police attended and a 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving above the alcohol limit."

The car is still in situ this morning and police confirmed that, as it is not in a dangerous position, it is the responsibility of its owner to arrange for it to be taken away.
