Police arrest suspected drink driver after early hours smash in Houghton
A car was left with severe front end damage after a suspected drunk driver crashed at Rainton Bridge just after midnight today.
The driver of the grey Nissan Qashquai is believed to have lost control on the roundabout junction of Durham Road and the B1284.
It has struck the 30mph sign which was propelled to the opposite side of the road under the A690 flyover.
The 58-reg vehicle has then gone up the grass verge near the roundabout with Cygnet Way,before being left partially on the pavement.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "At 12.12am police were informed that a car had collided with a road sign at Rainton Bridge.
"Police attended and a 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving above the alcohol limit."
The car is still in situ this morning and police confirmed that, as it is not in a dangerous position, it is the responsibility of its owner to arrange for it to be taken away.
