Plumes of thick black smoke spotted near busy Sunderland road as firefighters tackle tyre fire

A number of tyres have been set alight near a busy Sunderland road on Sunday afternoon (August 23).

Plumes of thick smoke could be seen from Wessington Way, near the Northern Spire Bridge, after a number of tyres were set alight on land opposite Sainsbury’s supermarket.

One fire crew from Farringdon Station were called and arrived at the scene at 1.41pm and quickly extinguished the flames.

Pictures on social media show plumes of smoke rising above the city.

No one has been reported injured.
