Players out of contract in limbo at managerless Sunderland

Skipper John O'Shea, 37, Marc Wilson, Billy Jones and Kazenga LuaLua are out of contract this summer.

The Sunderland squad went their separate ways for the summer break after the Wolves game.

The players were originally due in Monday for final meetings but caretaker boss Robbie Stockdale changed the plans following Chris Coleman’s sacking last weekend.

Stewart Donald is looking to take over at Sunderland but his takeover is still awaiting EFL approval and a new manager is not expected to be appointed until the takeover is confirmed.

Stockdale, in the aftermath of the 3-0 win over Wolves, said: "The original plan under Chris and Kit was they would be in Monday, chats over contracts, post-season plans etc.

“I have decided not to do that as it is not my decision what happens next with the players out of contract.”

O'Shea could have played his final game for the club and he received an ovation when he was subbed late in the game.

Writing in his programme notes, the skipper admitted he is uncertain over his future.

O'Shea wrote: "My contract is also up at the end of the season and at this moment my future remains unclear.

"If this is my final game with the club, the only thing I can say is thank you.

"Throughout my time here the supporters have been nothing short of outstanding, and you've stood by the team whether we've deserved it or not.

"When I signed a one-year deal last summer I was determined to play my part in taking the club back where it belongs. For many reasons, that hasn't happened.

"But whatever the future holds for me personally, I sincerely hope that everything that makes this club so special shines through on and off the pitch.

"I might not be back but Sunderland will be. Thanks for the support."
