How did the players get on at the Stadium of Light? Richard Mennear gives his player ratings below:

Sunderland (4-3-3)

Jordan Pickford: Looked more composed than at Goodison Park, kicking as accurate as ever. Could do little about Aguero opener or Sane's second. Important saves second half...MOM 7

Billy Jones: Jones twice almost gave Sunderland the lead from corners. Coped well with Sane first half but winger got his revenge after the break with a lovely finish...6

John O'Shea (C): Alongside Aguero had marshalled the threat of Aguero well until just before half-time. Booked.....6

Lamine Kone: Was going well before Aguero stole half a yard on him to give City the lead. Has happened too often this season.....6

Bryan Ovideo: Was up against one of the best wingers in the top flight in Sterling, tough afternoon but did okay. Linked up well with Borini down the left flank first half.....6

Seb Larsson: Improved display from Goodison Park, fortunate not to be booked though. Corners improved, with Jones almost scoring from one....6

Didier Ndong: Played in a more advanced role, closing down the City defence to prevent them playing out from the back. Covered a lot of ground but little attacking threat....6

Darron Gibson: Worked hard in central midfield. It was too comfortable for City second half though as Sunderland couldn't keep up the pressing game. Went off injured....6

Adnan Januzaj: Frustrating and brilliant in equal measure. One moment he beats four men, then he fails to pick a simple pass. Better overall...7

Fabio Borini: Started really well down the left flank, working hard, winning tackles and linking up with Ovideo. Poor header from the rebound from Defoe's shot.....6

Jermain Defoe: Did brilliantly 20-yards from goal but his shot cannoned off the post. Would have had more openings were it not for poor passing. Goal rightly disallowed....6

Subs:

Jack Rodwell (for Gibson, 70): Didn't add much of a spark on his return from injury....6

Wahbi Khazri (for Januzaj, 82): Token ten minutes for Khazri with Sunderland already trailing 2-0. Added some spark.....6
