Sunderland (4-4-1-1):

Jordan Pickford: Had very little to do first half, commanded his area well when called upon. Brilliant save to deny Vokes late on.....7

Billy Jones: Defensively sound but offered little going the other way. Missed an absolute sitter with his head. Booked....6

John O'Shea (C): Sunderland defence had hands full with Barnes and Gray, organiser O'Shea benefited from pace of Denayer alongside him.....7

Jason Denayer: Overall, impressed on his return to the side in central defensive role, with Lamine Kone out injured. Rare mistake late on, Pickford saved Vokes' effort...7.

Bryan Oviedo: Has done well since he arrived on Wearside and Burnley game was no different. Nothing flash, just gets on with his job.....7

Jack Rodwell: In for Didier Ndong. Lacked the energy of Ndong but helped keep pantomime villiant Joey Barton quiet first half. Kept Sunderland ticking over.....6

Darron Gibson: Tried to get Sunderland moving when he had possession. Made some important interceptions, another good performance. Booked....7

Seb Larsson: Didn't do enough to cause the Burnley defence any problems. Blazed a shot over from 6-yards second half. Superb cross for Jones' missed header.....6

Adnan Januzaj: Looked Sunderland's brightest attacking threat first half but final ball was poor. Denied by Heaton. Saw another effort go just wide...6

Fabio Borini: Played in his more favoured central role alongside Defoe. Saw one bobbled effort saved by Heaton first half, second Heaton denied him with brilliant save....6

Jermain Defoe: Clearly frustrated by the poor service to him. Had very few openings. Ball just wouldn't drop to him....6

Subs:

Didier Ndong (for Gibson, 73). Added some energy and pace to the midfield but gave away silly free-kicks.....6

Wahbi Khazri (for Larsson, 77). First pass to Defoe was heavy, good opening.....6
