PICTURES: Your #SmearForSmear selfies for Cervical Cancer Prevention Week

Throughout this week, women across the UK have been wearing lipstick with a difference to raise awareness of cervical cancer.

And now, as the annual Cervical Cancer Prevention Week draws to a close, we are celebrating all of the North East Press readers (and staff members too) who dared to smear to encourage women's attendance at routine screenings.

The campaign, launched for the second year by Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, calls on women to apply their lipstick, smear their lipstick and nominate a friend to do the same.

In its inaugural year, #SmearForSmear saw celebrities, politicians and thousands and women everywhere take part.

With figures revealing that one in four women in the UK were not attending their smear tests when invited by the doctor, it was hoped that the initiative would remind and encourage women to attend their screenings for the second year in a row.

Necessary and potentially life-saving, the tests are routine for women over 25 - and just attending them could reduce the scope of cervical cancer across the country.

Thank you to all of our readers who have shared their selfies this week - hopefully together we have done more to spread the message, and reduce the risk of this disease for women everywhere.
