The annual event, run by a literacy charity, is aimed at encouraging schoolchildren to get excited about the world of books.

The national day has grown each year with thousands of youngsters across the city getting in the spirit and going to school dressed as their heroes.

This year’s bookworms included Millie Robinson, seven, from Hendon who dressed up as the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, a costume which won her a prize at Grangetown Primary.
