A MOBILE phone mast will be erected next to a school despite community concerns.

Vodafone’s application for a 15metre-high telecommunications pole at Peterlee Parachute Centre, Shotton Colliery, have been approved by Durham County Council.

Governors of Shotton Primary School asked if it would be safe for its 400 pupils, because of the close proximity of the mast to its grounds.

Other objections came from three residents and a doctor’s surgery.

At a meeting of the Central and East Durham planning committee, officers explained the mobile phone company had been given notice to quit its exisiting site at a nearby haulage depot, and needed another.

The plans fully complied with health guidance on exposure to radio emissions.
