A POPULAR workingmen’s club, which rose from the ashes after a fire, is in the running for an award – for the second year in a row.
South Hylton Workingmen’s Club, which suffered a freak fire caused by an ice machine, has undergone a £300,000 refurbishment. The club’s success, and the way its top-class team ensured functions still went ahead, has put it among the contenders for a What’s On Where award.
The club is no stranger to the competition as it won the social club of the year category in last year’s event.
Assistant secretary Peter Anderson, who works at the club as a volunteer, said: “We are over the moon and it is wonderful that people have nominated us. It has been a pretty difficult year but we have got great customers. The members have been brilliant and really rallied round. They have supported us through a difficult time.”
The nomination for the club said: “All the staff and members rallied round to make sure that people who came for a night out still enjoyed the experience.
“The bar is now open again after a total refurb and all is back to normal. During the disruption there was still the usual high standard of entertainment and any bookings for private functions still went ahead.”
The awards are held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7, and aim to reward the elite in everything from restaurants to children’s venues, takeaways to parks and community areas, and hotels to the best shopping experience.
It’s only the second time we have held the awards and we want to build on the success of last year’s great inaugural competition.
We want you to nominate your favourites in each of the categories listed on this page. There is plenty of time to put forward your favourites as the deadline for entries is February 5, next year.
We will be revealing the winners on February 26 in a glittering finale at The Best Western Roker Hotel.
