Took something very special to beat the Scot, who was in excellent form again. Made a number of good stops. 8
Came through another tough test reasonably well. Couldnt contribute much going forward. 6

Very shaky on the ball and made some poor clearances in the final minutes. 6
A steady debut. Aerial ability was very important and the side looked better for having a natural left-footer in that part of the pitch. 7
Never gave anything away defensively and laid on a fantastic cross for Maja to score. Put in some fine balls in what was perhaps his best Sunderland display yet. 8
Started brightly and scared the Scunthorpe defence with his direct running but couldnt sustain it as the game developed. 5
Defensively did well and made a number of clearances, but didnt control the game in the way that he is capable of. 5
Played his part in the equaliser but generally looked off the pace and struggled to impose himself. 5
Always showed for the ball and tried to drive Sunderland forward but unable to create much of substance. 5
Bright start but quickly faded and made little impression before being replaced early in the second half. 5
Struggled to get into the game but then showcased his qualities in fine fashion. A good turn and pass to release Reece James, and then a superb run and finish to put his side ahead. The difference, again. 7
Missed a good chance to score from a corner not long before Hammills equaliser. Did a decent job of linking up the play. 6
Some good runs off the shoulder but no end product. 5
