A PET store is hepling to make sure that Sunderland’s abandoned animals aren’t forgotten this Christmas.

Pets at Home, in Sunderland, will be running its Santa Paws appeal, collecting gifts and donations for abandoned animals during the festive season.

Up until Christmas Eve, the store will be encouraging customers to buy an extra gift or make a donation to benefit a needy pet at a local animal rescue.

Customers can also help to buy a pet a Christmas dinner for a 50p donation, with all money going to a local animal welfare charity to supply much needed food over the Christmas period.

Store manager Raine Worrall said: “Not every pet is lucky enough to be treated at Christmas and that’s why we are launching our Santa Paws appeal again this year.”

“Customers simply pay for their gift at the till and receive a sticker to place on the product. The gift can then be placed in the charity collection bin found in-store. We will then invite local rescues to come in and collect whatever has been donated.”

Last year, the initiative raised more than £114,000 for animals being cared for in UK re-homing centres.
