A TODDLER had to be freed from their mother’s car after it locked automatically.

The 18-month-old boy became trapped in the Audi A4 as it was parked up in Polden Close, Peterlee.

The woman had been trying to get into the vehicle for 20 minutes before firefighters from the town’s fire station arrived.

Crew members smashed a back quarter-light window, lowered the window and then were able to get into the car.

Officers said the child was distressed when they arrived, but was unharmed in the incident.
