A rallying call is being sent across Wearside to play its part in helping refugees.

Sunderland City of Sanctuary has been inundated with hundreds of messages from people voicing their support - now it is asking for people to act on their pledge.

A collection point for donations has been set up at Sunderland Bangladesh International Centre, with volunteers needed to box clothes and toiletries to be sent to the camps in Calais.

They will be transported after a walk on Saturday, starting at the centre in Tatham Street at 1pm and closing with a vigil beneath the mural close to the Wearmouth Bridge at 1.30pm.

Flower or biodegradable tissue paper petals will be sprinkled into the river to symbolise lives lost at sea.

The event is also supported by Unite Community Sunderland, Sunderland People’s Assembly and Penshaw Clothing Bank and the centre can be called on (0191) 564 0888.
