The driver of the bus was not injured in the incident and was spoken to at the scene by officers.

Three other passengers who were on the bus were treated for minor injuries.

Police have praised members of the public who came to the woman’s aid and, with inquiries into the circumstances around the collision ongoing, officers are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Pinner Rana, of Northumbria Police’s motor patrols department, said police were particularly keen to speak to anyone who might have video of the collision, and added: “This was a serious incident that resulted in a woman taken to hospital with significant injury.
