Washington florist showing support for St Benedict's Hospice 'Sunflower Day' with special fundraising event

Lily Bows, in Washington, wanted to use her sunflowers to support the good work done by the hospice, especially after seeing how hard it has been hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

The hospice, which is only part funded by the NHS, relies on fundraisers and donations to provide special palliative care to residents throughout the city.

On Friday, the annual Sunflower Day will see a host of the city’s landmarks lit up in yellow to highlighting the work done by the hospice.

Owner of Lily Bows florist, Amiee Nolan said: “.We wanted to show our appreciation to the staff at St Benedict's Hospice and as a florist we use sunflowers regularly so decided for that day I would like to help and raise as much funds possible.

“I think the service they provide is amazing and the staff work extremely hard.”

Last year's inaugural sunflower day saw over 100 businesses, schools and organisations don the bright yellow for the day in a show of support.

This year, landmarks such as Keel Square, High Street West, Northern Spire Bridge, Penshaw Monument and Fulwell Mill will once again be lit yellow.

Lily Bows will also be hosting a raffle to further try and raise money for the hospice and are encouraging everyone to wear yellow, show their support and donate to a great cause.
