Residents and businesses in the city have donated 1,000 chocolate eggs to put a smile on the faces of children whose parents are working on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis this Easter.
Sunderland Foodbank – which has also been delivering food packages to elderly and vulnerable residents - appealed to the public for donations of Easter eggs to go to young people who have been affected by the current circumstances.

Council workers were joined by people who signed up to the Volunteering Scheme to deliver the surprises to the children.
The scheme was set up by Sunderland City Council to allow the public to register to help the elderly and most vulnerable during the covid-19 pandemic.
Erin Simblett, who signed up as a volunteer, said: "I volunteered as I have more time on my hands and I know how busy services are, so wanted to do my bit to help.

Fiona Brown, the executive director of neighbourhoods at Sunderland City Council, commented: "It's great to see our Council staff working together with the community to bring some joy during this uncertain time. We would like
to say thank you to Sunderland Foodbank, everyone who donated the Easter eggs, and to our staff and the volunteers who took their time to make Easter special for these children.
"All of the key workers in Sunderland are working tirelessly to ensure that our residents remain safe and healthy. It is important that we all recognise what they are doing and remember how this will be affecting their loved ones.
