The ‘Big Sleep In’ involved over 200 young people and volunteers from Washington and Houghton taking part in challenges, games and learning new skills as well as getting the opportunity to speak with special guests Terry Deary and Chief Commissioner of Scouts UK, Tim Kidd OBE.

Sunderland’s own Terry Deary was more than happy to get involved with the event and answered questions on where his inspiration came from and where he would go back in time if he had the chance.

The event was designed to bring people together, using technology to uplift and excite and to put a smile on the faces of young people.

Gemma Younghusband, Event Leader, 36 from Shiney Row said “The event was testimony to a brilliant group of volunteers who worked hard to adapt scouting to make it possible to run online and scout from home. We loved how the enthusiasm of our beavers, cubs and scouts brought joy to families across our district.”

Across the weekend, scouts were able to virtually attend 10 different workshops including everything from garden based survival, wicked workouts, cool science, a murder mystery, home baking and art attack.

Overnight, beavers, cubs and scouts were encouraged to sleep out in homemade dens, tents or to find somewhere unusual to spend a night at home.

The 24-hour adventure was made possible by a team of volunteers delivering different sessions in difficult circumstances.
