Pictures show extent of fire damage to the derelict Grade II listed Simpson Street School building

Firefighters have tackled a blaze at a former Sunderland school building which caused severe damage to its roof.

Crews were called to the Simpson Street School in the Deptford area at around 6pm on Tuesday, January 28 and battled the fire for more than five hours, before leaving the scene at 11.32pm.

The fire service has said it believes the fire was ‘likely to have been started deliberately’ and a police have now launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
