North East warning about 'fake Scottish £20 notes currently in circulation'

Police have urged shopkeepers and their customers to be wary of a spate of fake Scottish £20 notes currently in circulation in the North East.

Officers have warned “people to be vigilant when using cash” and reminded shopkeepers that they have detector pens available to help them examine notes.

A Peterlee Police statement issued on Friday, November 6, on social media read: “We have been made aware of fake Scottish £20 notes currently in circulation around Peterlee.

“We’d urge people to be vigilant when using cash and refuse any notes they believe to be counterfeit.

“Shopkeepers should also be aware and check all notes with a counterfeit note detector pen. We have a small number of these pens available to business owners.”

Any business in the Peterlee area wanting a detector pen is urged to contact Peterlee Police by sending a private message via their Facebook page for further details.
