Man taken to hospital after emergency service alert on Sunderland's Northern Spire bridge

A man was brought to safety and taken to hospital after he was helped from the wrong side of the railings on a River Wear bridge.

Northumbria Police officers were joined by Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, the North East Ambulance Service and RNLI responders at 4.40pm yesterday, Wednesday, June 24.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “At 4.36pm yesterday we received a report of concern for welfare for a male on the Spire bridge.

“Officers attended the scene where they found a male on the wrong side of the railings.

“He was brought to safety a short time after and taken to hospital.”
