The travel agent said more than 3,000 of its staff sprang into action to help customers in Spain or due to travel there imminently, following the quarantine announcement on Saturday, July 25.

Hays Travel confirmed it is continuing to contact tens of thousands of clients due to travel to Spain imminently to let them know their rebooking or refund options.

A Hays Travel spokeswoman said: "We are contacting everyone who is due to go to Spain in departure date order.

"Their options are to rebook for another destination or later date, or to get a refund.

"The vast majority of people are opting to rebook rather than take a refund.

"In fact we have had people turn up with suitcases packed asking us to find them a new destination and they have happily gone off to Greece or Turkey instead of Spain.

"We are still receiving enquiries for new bookings, especially for our selected holidays that have our 'Peace of Mind Guarantee' - if you book these holidays now, you can change or cancel the arrangements free of charge at any time up to six weeks before departure.

"We've also introduced insurance that covers customers and their party for any pandemic-related cancellation."
