On Thursday, December 12, along with the all important poll that day, we asked readers to decide on something different in our daily Facebook vote.

We asked you: “Do you think all hospital parking should be free?”

Out of over 1,900 readers who voted, 93% voted yes while only 7% voted against the idea.

Dave Ridley suggested: “It should be free, but to prevent abusers, they should do what pub car parks do and have an ANPR system where you put your reg number into an iPad on reception.”

Wendy Hall Smith argued: “I think you should have to pay for the first hour then after that it should be free. If your just having a appointment your usually in and out in an hour but if your in longer you shouldn't be charged as it's obviously more serious.”

Dean Rollin said: “You should get a code with your appointment letter that gives you free parking.”

Skye Cochrane added: “Of course make it free. People Don’t have a choice to be there. People can’t help being ill and the staff work 12 hour maybe longer and they still have to pay.”

Chris Hall said: “Yes for staff. Yes for patients. No for relatives after an hour free. Reasons are if you have a free big car park you get it full of people who aren’t using hospital facilities.”

Others thought a smaller charge would be better than parking being completely free.

Joyce White said: “I had to go to A&E. The waiting time was 4 hours plus and parking cost us £8. I don’t think it should be free. Maybe a small charge but £8 I think is shocking.”

Holly Rose James added: “I don’t mind paying a reasonable rate but they charge a fortune!”

Ken Ellison said: “I say no because it would end up being abused. I think it should not be as expensive as it is but definitely not free.”
