Investigation underway after power cut hits hundreds of homes and businesses across Sunderland

An investigation is underway to find the cause of a power cut which left hundreds of properties across Sunderland without electricity.

Northern Powergrid has said 614 buildings across the Southwick were affected by a gap in supply at 8.10pm today, Wednesday, January 8.

The energy was restored electricity to four properties within eight minutes, while a further 484 saw their power back on by 8.37pm.

It has said another 126 addresses should see their power back on by 9.45pm.

The cause of the issue is not yet known, but engineers are working to pinpoint what led to the problems.

Northern Powergrid’s power cut map, which can be found by clicking here, has said it is an “unexpected problem with the cables or equipment” serving the area.

It added: “We are currently working hard to restore your power however we are unable to provide an accurate restoration time.
