An investigation has been launched into an arson attack in Sunderland on New Year’s Eve.

Police were called to Ridley Street, Southwick, just after midnight on December 31, after two cars were set on fire.

Thankfully, no one was injured, but one of the cars – a Ford Fiesta 09 reg – was destroyed.

Northumbria Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing for anyone with information to contact the force.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Shortly before 12.15am on December 31 we received a report two vehicles had been set alight on Ridley Street, Southwick.

“Officers and emergency services attended the scene and the blaze was extinguished. No one was injured.

“An investigation was subsequently launched and the incident is now being treated as arson.

“Inquiries remain ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police using the Tell us Something page on our website, quoting log 9 311220.”
