Hylton Castle and Dene walking route - a 30 minute walk around one of Sunderland's oldest landmarks

Take a quick stroll on this 1.4 mile route around Hylton Castle and Dene which is full of some of the oldest history in Sunderland.

As lockdown continues walking has become the highlight of the weekend. This route will allow you to take in some of Sunderland’s history on your daily exercise.

This circular walk, which is 1.4 miles or 2.2km long, starts and finishes at Hylton Castle and it is estimated to take approximately half-an-hour to complete.

The heritage trail, which has been produced by Sunderland City Council, takes you through the history of the impressive Hylton Castle, which has stood in its current state since the late 14th to early 15th century.

The walk takes you around Hylton Dene by the fishing pond and next to what remains of St Catherine’s Chapel.
