Girl, 17, remains in critical condition after suffering life-threatening head injury in East Rainton incident

A teenage girl remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital as an investigation continues into an incident in East Rainton.

The 17-year-old was admitted to hospital with a life-threatening head injury in the early hours of Thursday, January 9, prompting a police investigation in the area.

Northumbria Police later confirmed they are investigating a ‘suspected road traffic accident’ on the Old Railway Line in East Rainton.

An 18-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and a 39-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice.

They have both been released under investigation and detectives’ inquiries continue in the area.

On Wednesday, January 22, a spokesperson for Nothumbria Police said: “A 17-year-old girl remains in a critical but stable condition.”
