Food bank collection points set up at Sunderland and South Shields Metro stations - here's where you can donate

Nexus, the public body which operates Metro, is running a collection for Tyne and Wear food banks to help families who are struggling to make ends meet amid the crisis.

Passengers can make donations as they pass through Sunderland’s Park Lane and South Shields transport interchange, as well as North Shields, Gateshead and Haymarket.

Each collection point will be set up to allow for social distancing.

Customer Services Director at Nexus, Huw Lewis, said: “Metro is right at the heart of the communities it serves so this collection is the least that we can do to help our local food banks at this time of national emergency.

“Passengers can leave their donations at a collection point located at five different stations on the network. The food will be distributed to food banks in each of the districts of Tyne and Wear.

“This will aid people in the most deprived areas of our region, many of who are struggling even more due to the devastating effects of the pandemic.

“Donations should be non-perishable items, for example long-life milk, tinned fish, pasta, rice, and other canned items. Please speak to a member of staff if you have items to spare and they can show you where to drop it off.”

Foodbank Collections are taking place at North Shields from June 22-26; Gateshead Interchange June 29-3 July; South Shields Interchange July 6-10; Park Lane Interchange July 13-17; Haymarket station July 20-24.
