Fire service called to Sunderland street after concern over electrical fault

An electrical fault has been reported in a street close to Sunderland city centre, leading to a call out to firefighters.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service sent two of its appliances from Sunderland Central Fire Station to Belvedere Road, in Ashbrooke, at 12.30pm yesterday, following the alert.

The teams were on scene until 2.10pm.

Northern Powergrid, which manages the power network, confirmed teams are working to a fault on the underground power network after a report of smoke coming from the pavement.

A spokeswoman added: "We received reports of a problem on an underground power network, near our Thorneholme Road substation in Sunderland, just after 1pm today.

“Our teams are on site working to carry out a repair and traffic management has been requested.

"Customers power supplies have not been affected by the incident."

A power cut map on its website said 80 properties had been affected in the Hendon area – within the SR2 postcode - but it said there have been no reported issues in the area.
