Elderly woman hit by bus in Silksworth Lane remains in 'critical' condition in hospital

The 72-year-old pedestrian was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary after she was hit by a single-decker bus in Silksworth Lane, in between the Sainsbury’s and the Silksworth Sport Complex.

An investigation is ongoing as officers look to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision, which resulted in the road being closed for two-and-a-half hours.

Emergency services were scrambled at 12.20pm on Monday, December 16, and the woman was treated at the scene before being airlifted to the Newcastle hospital.

She remains in a critical condition on Wednesday, December 18, and her injuries have been described as ‘life-threatening’.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, of Northumbria Police’s motor patrols department, has now appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward with information.

“This was a very serious incident that has resulted in an elderly woman taken to hospital and fighting for her life,” he said.

“We are offering her family support at this difficult time and we are now committed to determining the events that preceded the collision.

“This collision happened on a busy road in Sunderland and a number of pedestrians and motorists will have been in the area at the time. We are now asking anybody who saw what happened, and who have yet to come forward, to give us a call.

“We would also ask drivers to check their dashcam footage if you were passing through the area at that time and get in touch if you notice anything that could assist with the investigation.”

Go North East, who operated the 33A bus involved in the collision, confirmed on Monday that no one else was injured during the crash.

Stephen King, commercial director at Go North East said: “Whilst shocked, our driver and our passengers on board were not injured. We are grateful to the passers by who stopped to help at the scene".
