The Bradley Lowery Foundation, set up in honour of six-year-old schoolboy Bradley who died after suffering neuroblastoma cancer, has launched a ‘6k in six days’ challenge, urging supporters to talk, run or wheel the distance to raise money for its cause.

It began on Friday, May 1 and is open to all ages and capabilities – with TV star and businesswoman Sara recording a personal video for the launch.

The challenge gives participants six days to take on six kilometres and asks that they raise £20 or more in sponsorship to go towards the charity’s valuable work in helping youngsters.

Those who hit the target will receive a commemorative medal and will be encouraged to nominate three friends to take it on next,

Gemma Lowery, founder and chief executive of the charity and Bradley’s mum, said: “The last few weeks have been incredibly difficult for everyone, and we know that people are looking for exciting new challenges to get them up and moving when they’ve got cabin fever.

“Brad’s love of sport and activity was such a huge part of his life, so we hope that 6k in six days will light that fire inside others who need the motivation to get going.”

The distance can be completed as part of the allowed daily exercise, or in the home or garden.

Since it was founded in 2017, the Bradley Lowery Foundation has raised more than £3million for dozens of poorly children, established a dedicated support line for the families of children with cancer and campaigned for new drugs to be introduced in the UK.

Bradley was from Blackhall and was a huge supporter of Sunderland AFC, touching the hearts of football fans and families everywhere.

Gemma added: “It’s not a long distance and it’s an easily achievable fundraising target for all ages, so we hope it will be manageable from the toddlers to the Captain Toms.”
