A body has been found near Chopwell Woods in the search for missing Gateshead man Stewart Liddell.

The 69-year-old was reported missing on Tuesday, March 31, after he did not return from his morning walk.

Stewart was last seen leaving his home in Rowlands Gill at around 11am.

Officers have now confirmed that a body, believed to be Stewart, has been discovered in the area of Chopwell Woods.

A formal identification is yet to take place. Stewart’s family have been informed.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: “We do not believe there to be any third-party involvement in the death and a report will now be prepared for the coroner.

“Thank you to everyone who shared our appeal and we are sad that we couldn't bring you some more positive news.”
