People carrier left straddling bridge barrier after smash on major North East route

This was the aftermath of a collision which saw a car collide with a barrier over a busy river bridge.

The emergency services were called to the Redheugh Bridge over the River Tyne between the A189 St James' Boulevard, where the Renault Scenic had come off the sliproad to Askew Road in Gateshead.

The incident happened at 1.25am today, with fire crews from Newcastle Central and Gateshead called to stabilise the vehicle which had become stuck on a section of concrete and barriers.

Once the car was secure with chock blocks and other kit, the person inside was put onto a spinal board with the help of paramedics.

They were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle suffering from lower back pain.
