Pensioner knocked down by car that mounted pavement on busy Sunderland street

A MAN has been arrested after an elderly woman was knocked down when a car mounted a pavement in a busy shopping street.

The accident happened just after 11.50am on Saturday when the 72-year-old pensioner was struck by the vehicle on Sea Road, near the Maxwell DIY store.

The victim was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital suffering from two broken legs, although her condition is not thought to be life threatening.

The road was closed after the incident as investigations were carried out into the cause of the accident.

A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. He was bailed pending further inquiries.
