Penshaw Monument in Sunderland lights up for cancer charity appeal

The iconic landmark has been lit up to launch the Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal on Wearside.

The move is to show that each night while the city sleeps, nurses from the organisation are supporting people and families living with a terminal illness through the night.

The middle of the night is often the hardest time for the people our nurses support, and Marie Curie says it is in those darkest hours that the care of their nurses can make the most difference to those who are suffering.

Gemma Earl, Sunderland Marie Curie Nurse said: “For the next seven nights the iconic Penshaw Monument will shine for Marie Curie. We hope that when people see the glow they will think of those living with terminal illness.

“When the monument lights up many of us will be starting our shifts and we will work through the night supporting people who need our care.”

Adele Robinson, chairman of Sunderland Marie Curie fundraising group, said: “Marie Curie rely on local fundraising and without the support of our local community, our wonderful nurses would not be able to provide the services people in our city so desperately need.

“Sunderland residents can show their support by buying a daffodil from shops and supermarkets supporting us, they can also volunteer an hour or two at our Great Daffodil Appeal Sunderland City Centre collection on Saturday.”
