Patient taken to major trauma unit after being cut from car which collided with tree on Seaham road

Emergency services were called to Lord Byrons Walk, off the B1287 in Seaham, at around 5.10pm on Friday, February 5, where a car had collided with a tree.

One patient was trapped inside the vehicle and freed by fire crews before being transported to hospital in an ambulance – further details about their injuries have not been confirmed.

A nurse who was passing the incident on the notorious stretch of road stopped and provided assistance to the patient until emergency services arrived at the scene.

Witnesses say the Lord Byrons Walk was closed for a number of hours while paramedics, police and fire teams dealt with the incident and did not open until after 10pm, although this has not been confirmed.

A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service told the Echo: "We were called at 5.09pm to reports of a car involved in a collision with a tree. A nurse was passing the scene and she started assistance until the ambulance and our hazardous area response team arrived a few minutes later.

"We requested support from the fire service to help free a patient who was trapped in the car.

"We took them to the major trauma unit at James Cook Hospital.”

Further details about the injured patient or their current condition are yet to have been released.
