Pat McCormack says he has more to give after guaranteeing bronze medal at Commonwealth Games

Washington star Pat McCormack joined twin brother Luke in the Commonwealth Games boxing semi-finals after clinical victory on the Gold Coast.

McCormack - now guaranteed at least a bronze medal - had watched as his light welterweight sibling swatted aside Australia’s Liam Wilson - and silenced a partisan home crowd.

And it clearly inspired him as he took the early initiative in his welterweight quarter-final fight against tricky - but technically dubious - Ugandan Musa Bwogi.

Bwogi was no walkover and he came in swinging shots from every angle in a bid to unsettle McCormack, who doggedly stuck to his game plan to progress with a unanimous decision.

Bwogi had to take a standing count in the final round as McCormack showed his class.

Like his brother, the 22-year old won silver at last year’s European Championships but nothing less than a pair of matching golds will do here in Australia.

He now faces India’s Manoj Kumar, who seems to have brought scores of vocal supporters, after his split decision win over Australia’s Terry Nikolas.

McCormack said: “I thought I performed well. It was a different sort of opponent, he didn’t really come in much and was a bit stronger than the last guy but I got the dominant win I was looking for.

“I never emptied the tank, I’ve got plenty more to give.

“I watched Luke on the television and I love his showboating, I think he gave the crowd something to enjoy even though he beat the Aussie.

“I’ve boxed the Indian before at the Worlds qualifier two years ago. I won every round but we’ve both moved up a weight since then. He’s a decent boxer but if I perform then I will beat him.”
