BOGUS callers are being hunted after targeting an elderly woman.
Just after 5pm on Saturday, a man called at the address of an 81-year-old’s house in the Ryhope area.
He said there had been a blockage in one of the woman’s drains in her garden and asked if he could turn her water off.
While the woman stayed with the man, as he ran a tap in her kitchen, it is believed a second man has searched a bedroom upstairs. Officers say it is not known if anything was stolen.
Police have urged householders to be cautious when answering a call at their door to cold callers. Advice includes stopping to think if the caller is expected, putting the door chain or door bar on before opening the door and keep it on while talking to them and asking for the caller’s identity card and check it carefully – even if the person has a pre-arranged appointment
Anyone with information about Saturday’s scam is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111,
