The city’s RNLI volunteers were alerted today, Sunday, November 1, after the three were spotted in trouble in the water off Roker beach, in between the piers.

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue co-ordinated the efforts, while both inshore lifeboats were launched to reach the paddle boarders, with its officers on hand to meet those helped when they reached dry land.

A spokesperson for the RNLI said: “Our volunteer crew onboard our Atlantic 85 recovered two of the casualties onto the boat while the third casualty self rescued to the beach with the support of our D class and her crew.

"When all three persons were safely ashore our volunteers recovered the lifeboats to the station to wash down and refuel.”

The Coastguard has said anyone who needs to report an emergency on the coast should call 999 and ask for the service.
